Songs I Love, and Why I Love Them

70

By Motown2Chitown

My love affair with songs.

I love music. I love words. The two put together send me into an arena of bliss that’s completely indescribable. I’ve been singing since I was able to speak, and, I’ve always had a taste in music that surprised most. I say that because my taste spans many genres and many decades, and most of my favorite music comes from the years before those in which I grew up, which is when most people develop their musical preferences. To give an example, during the nineties, when most kids my age were listening to grunge rock, I was listening to ABBA, Dan Fogelberg, and Bette Midler. I didn’t start to love grunge until I was in my late twenties.

So, without further ado, I shall introduce you to me – through the sharing of some of my favorite songs of all time. If I was going to share them all, we would fast run out of internet space, so I’m going to limit my list to just a few (and they will be in no particular order).

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves

  • Walking on Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves

I love this song just because it’s happy. It makes me smile, and makes me bob my head and dance as I sing along. It’s not a deep song with a profound message, but it is a song that makes me feel good and makes me want to smile and be kind to everyone I meet throughout the day.

ABBA - I Am the City

  • I Am the City – ABBA

ABBA was a prolific pop group from the seventies, and I listened to them in the late eighties and early nineties as a teenager. I honestly can’t think of a single song by ABBA that I don’t enjoy, but this one has to me my hands-down favorite. Why? It’s a brilliant personification of the modern city, and I absolutely adore the modern city. I like the noise, the crowds, the energy – and this song by ABBA tells us how the city feels. It’s a brilliant and energetic song that always leaves me wishing it wouldn’t end.

Roll to Me - Del Amitri

  • Roll to Me – Del Amitri

This is one of the shortest songs I’ve ever heard, and again, it’s one that I wish wouldn’t end. It’s a simple song about the right guy showing up at the right time. All of us have looked around our world at some point and realized that it isn’t all we hoped it would be. Then, when we least expect it, someone shows up in our life who makes us certain that we have a champion. Roll to Me is just a fun song that makes me hopeful.

In My Life - Bette Midler (cover)

  • In My Life – Bette Midler (cover - originally by the Beatles)

This song is a beautiful tune of reminiscence that has always given me pause to look back over my life and the wonderful people who have been a part of it. My late mom also loved this song (the original, she never cared much for the Bette Midler cover), and I listen to it often when I’m missing her. It raises my spirits and brings back many good memories of our life together.

Make Love Stay - Dan Fogelberg

  • Make Love Stay – Dan Fogelberg

I love everything by Dan, but this song is more brilliantly poetic than almost anything I’ve ever seen. It’s the story of a love affair that seems empty at times, and an out loud musing about how to make love stay after the lust and excitement have maybe gone away. This song is beautiful, and dare I say it – striking in its simplicity.

1, 2, 3, 4 - Plain White T's

  • 1, 2, 3, 4 – Plain White T’s

I heard this song for the first time just after meeting my husband, and it just seemed a really fun way of describing how I felt about him. It’s one that I would call a happy-boppy, feel good song. In addition to all that, the video has great scenes shot in downtown Chicago. Hope you enjoy it!

Too many favorites to list.

To continue to list songs that I love would possibly cause a world wide crash of the internet. I can say that I’m always drawn to singers who write their own stuff, and some of my favorites are Dan Fogelberg, Billy Joel, Rich Mullins, and Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden fame). I believe that songwriters have been granted a divine gift that few of us can understand – the gift of taking mere words and simple tunes and turning out something magnificent that moves the heart, soul, and spirit.

Watch (and listen to) the videos and enjoy!

I love music too. And also have too many to list. A young 16 year old girl at my church has a love of old music. I send links to the old classics to her and she puts them into her Ipod. Patsy Cline's Crazy, George Jones' The Grand Tour, Bread's If, Iron Butterfly's inagaddadavida, The Boss' The River, Cindy Lauper's Sally's Pigeons, Elvis' Green Green Grass of Home and a thousand more.

I love, love, love Patsy Cline and George Strait. I only had so much room, and honestly I could have listed so many more as favorites. These few were songs I can listen to again and again. I like so much country music, and I didn't even touch on that! Thanks for stopping by, Hyph! :-)

Awesome Mo - I love a lot of the same stuff. Did you know Dan Fogelberg died not long ago? It was a sad day. Run for the roses - love that song and several others by him. I always listened to older stuff too because I remember my mom and uncle listening to it:)

Hi, Real. I did know Dan died, and it was a very sad day. I follow his Facebook page too - they do a LOT of tributes to him in his home town (Peoria, IL). Run for the Roses is one of my faves by him too - almost anything really. Music from the late sixties and early seventies is probably my favorite. I also love a lot of the rock from the nineties, but not until much later in my life.

My absolute favorites are classic rock, country, nineties rock, seventies singer/songwriter stuff (Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Carole King), almost anything classical. I also like a lot of alternative, punk type stuff. Straight up new age stuff when I'm needing to relax.

Of course we would like the same music - we have the same spirit! :-)

Mo - youre so right! I bought club seats to the last James Taylor/Carol King concert for a gift for Dave (of course I loved it!) I love them - and everything else you mentioned!

I think Carole King is a brilliant songwriter! I'd have enjoyed that concert too! Told you, kindred spirits, girl. My mom loved both James Taylor and Carole King as well.

Your first and your last song on your list is one of my favorites as well... and ABBA - my husband always wondered my obsession with them. I loved them even more after the movie Mamma Mia came out, but really started to enjoy them with Muriel's Wedding. My favorite - Dancing Queen. It is just irritating enough to be in a small group of Dancing Queen fanatics and the rest just hate us. LOL

The is cool about the Plain White T's though. I didn't realize there video was set in Chicago. I will have to watch it again.

If you want another good song... listen to Something Stupid by Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams. That song gives me butterflies!

I'll have to check that one out, BBG - I have heard almost everything ABBA ever did, and I gotta admit, Dancing Queen is a tried and true classic. I have other faves by them, of course, but that one can't help but be fun!

It's a really cute video, I thought. That sculpture they're in front of is called the Bean. :)

Hey MO - I'll be in Chicago on 7/30 for 9 hours! LOL I really thought the kids would enjoy a train ride. We figured we'd take them to Navy Pier - have some lunch - do a bit of shopping and go home:). You should meet us down there with your pimpin' husband!

Oh, that's awesome! I'll have to check with him - we may be going out of town for a wedding, but I'm not sure! It would be so awesome to meet you guys! I'll give you the skinny soon.

Some of those are my favorites too. Some, I've never heard of, but oh my gosh. Dan Fogleberg. I loved his music. It's been a while. Thanks for the video links.

I always loved music that was supposed to have been 'before my time' too, Mo. I grew up listening to 60s and 70s music, because my mum loved to play her records all the time. ABBA were among her favourites, and I think I know all of their songs, my favourite being 'Move On'. So much wonderful music from those times. But I love 30s, 40s and 50s music too. I wasn't so keen on the 80s, but things have picked up since then! Music is just a wonderful thing, isn't it? Could you possibly imagine life without it?! Urgh, horrible!

Linda.

Linda, I'd lose my mind without music. I like "Move On" as well. Like you, I love the standards and classics - and with very few exceptions, I also wasn't keen on the 80's...not a great decade for music. ABBA is one of my favorite groups of all time! My other favorites of theirs are, of course, "The Winner Takes it All," and "One of Us."

I know - you never really know how hard it is to come up with a list of favorites until you try. Thanks for stopping in! Try to name just ten! :)

Wistfulguy 9 months ago

Hey Mo2Chi - I'm curious which song by Chris Cornell is your favorite? I'm a big fan too.

Motown2Chitown 9 months ago

Ah, Wistfulguy - I find it hard to pick a fave by Chris Cornell, but I love everything Audioslave put out, and I absolutely LOVED Chris's solo album "Euphoria Morning." I think my favorite on that one is "Can't Change Me." Thanks for stopping in.

Wistfulguy 9 months ago

I agree, it is difficult to pick a favorite when they are all so great. I first heard him with Soundgarden, but didn't realize his real depth until Audioslave (although he was great with Eddy Vedder in Temple of the Dog). And when I heard Soundgarden reunited (great performance not too long ago on the Conan O'Brian show), I was ecstatic. Looking at your list of favorites, it seems Cornell stands out as a different type of music than the rest of the ones you list. How did you get introduced?

Motown2Chitown profile image

Motown2Chitown Hub Author 8 months ago

A gentleman I was very close to introduced me to Audioslave, actually, and I sort of followed Chris backward from there. Even though I was of the grunge age, I didn't pick up on a lot from that era until I was well into being an adult. That male friend opened up a whole new world for me where music was concerned. He was a great admirer of Chris Cornell as a poet and that's sort of what drew me to him as well. :D

....great choices Michelle - I was weaned and brought up on the 45rpm record and it was all about that hook in those 2 to 3 minutes and it still continues to this day - a great song is a great song - no matter what decade, era or time frame ...... and this is a wonderful hub based on your love of music and love of life ..... lake erie time ontario canada 8:55am

Colin, thanks again for stopping by. Honestly, I wish I had all the time in the world to just put together a list of all time favorite songs. I used to listen endlessly to my sister's collection of 45's. I agree completely about a great song being great no matter what. It's easiest to see when it's a success when covered in another genre completely different from its original one.

:)
